Nectar to Avios: when converting makes sense (and when it doesn't)
The official Nectar to Avios rate is 400 Nectar points to 250 Avios. Here's the break-even maths, how to convert, the monthly limits, and when it's better to keep your Nectar points.

The short answer: Nectar's terms set the rate at 400 Nectar points = 250 Avios, converted instantly. At Sainsbury's, 400 Nectar points are worth ยฃ2. So converting only pays off if you'll use each Avios for more than 0.8p. For many Reward Flights that's achievable. For small everyday redemptions it often isn't. Conversion is one-way in practice, because going back from Avios to Nectar is a different rate (400 Avios = 400 Nectar points).
The official rates and limits
From Nectar's Avios partner terms:

- Avios โ Nectar:

Caps:
- Manual conversions: up to 80,000 Nectar points or 50,000 Avios per calendar month.
- Automatic conversions: up to 40,000 Nectar points or 25,200 Avios per calendar quarter.
BA's Spending Avios page confirms the reverse rate: "Collect 400 Nectar points for every 400 Avios converted".
The break-even maths
Nectar spells out what a point is worth when you spend it at Sainsbury's: you spend in multiples of ยฃ2.50, and 500 points = ยฃ2.50. That's 0.5p per point. Nectar also says that "as a guide, 2,000 Nectar points are worth ยฃ10" on Nectar Hotels, which is the same 0.5p.
So:
- 400 Nectar points are worth ยฃ2.00 at Sainsbury's.
- Converted, they become 250 Avios.
- ยฃ2.00 รท 250 = 0.8p per Avios.
Rule of thumb: convert only if you're confident you'll get more than 0.8p per Avios. Below that, you'd do better spending the Nectar points at Sainsbury's.
Worked examples (official figures only)
Example 1: a short-haul Reward Flight. BA's Reward Flights page shows Europe "from 10,000 Avios + ยฃ2.50 each-way" (correct as of May 2026). To get 10,000 Avios from Nectar, you'd convert 16,000 Nectar points (16,000 รท 400 ร 250 = 10,000). At Sainsbury's, those 16,000 points are worth ยฃ80. So converting only makes sense if the flight would otherwise cost you more than about ยฃ82.50 in cash (the ยฃ80 plus the ยฃ2.50 you still pay). If a cash fare on the same flight costs less than that, keep your Nectar points.
Example 2: "topping up" for a bigger trip. Say you have 52,000 Avios and need 55,000 for a long-haul return (BA quotes "from 55,000 Avios + ยฃ150 return for destinations further afield"). You'd need 3,000 more Avios. Steps are 400 Nectar points for 250 Avios, so 3,000 Avios takes 12 steps: 4,800 Nectar points (worth ยฃ24 at Sainsbury's). Here a small conversion unlocks a much bigger redemption, which is where converting tends to make most sense.
Example 3: the wrong way round. Converting 400 Nectar points to 250 Avios and later back again gives you 250 Nectar points' worth at best. Converting back needs at least 400 Avios, in steps of 400, at 400:400. Don't convert "just in case".
How to convert
1. Link your accounts. Nectar's terms say you must link your British Airways Club account and your Nectar account. You can do this from either the Nectar or BA side.
2. Choose "Convert your points" for a one-off conversion, or "Opt-in to automatic conversion" to move points regularly.
3. Pick the amount in steps of 400 Nectar points.
4. Check your BA Club balance. Nectar to Avios is instant according to Nectar's terms.
Converting Avios to Nectar needs date-of-birth and email validation. Never share your Nectar or BA login details with anyone, and we'll never ask for them.
Automatic Avios-to-Nectar conversion: Not yet confirmed. Nectar's terms contradict each other here. One section says new customers can't sign up to automatic Avios-to-Nectar conversion (only pre-16 February 2021 sign-ups continue). Another says you can opt in to automatic conversion "vice versa". If you want automatic Avios-to-Nectar conversion, check in your account first. Automatic Nectar-to-Avios conversion is covered by both sections.
Things to know before you convert
- Converted Avios can't be Boosted. The Avios terms exclude "Nectar conversions" from Boosting.
- Conversion bonuses come and go. Avios and Nectar sometimes run time-limited bonuses on conversions. If you aren't in a hurry, it can be worth waiting for one, but check the dates and terms.
- Keep both accounts active. Nectar may close an account with no points earned or redeemed for 12 months in a row. BA Club Avios expire after 36 months without qualifying activity. See our expiry rules guide.
- In-store redemption rule. Nectar's terms say you must have shopped and earned points in a particular store within the last 12 months to spend points there.
So should you convert?
- Convert if you've found a specific Reward Flight, you need a top-up to reach it, and the value works out at more than 0.8p per Avios.
- Don't convert if you have no plan for the Avios, or if the cash fare is cheap. Nectar points at Sainsbury's give you a guaranteed 0.5p.
