How to convert Tesco Clubcard points to Virgin Points (and is it worth it?)

Tesco Clubcard converts at 1 Clubcard point to 2 Virgin Points. How manual and automatic exchange work, the minimums, the current sign-up bonus, and the simple maths for deciding whether to convert.

The short answer: Virgin Atlantic lists Tesco Clubcard as a partner at 1 Clubcard point = 2 Virgin Points. At Tesco, a Clubcard point is worth 1p in vouchers. So converting makes sense if you'll get more than 0.5p per Virgin Point. Virgin's own Points Plus Money option values a point at 0.55p, so even that fallback beats spending at Tesco, provided you were going to book a Virgin Atlantic flight or holiday anyway. Once converted, points can't be turned back into Clubcard vouchers.

Tesco's terms say manual exchanges happen "in denominations of £1.50". Virgin's page gives examples of £2.50 → 500 Virgin Points, £5 → 1,000 and £10 → 2,000. Those amounts aren't multiples of £1.50, so the exact steps for manual exchange are Not yet confirmed. Check the options shown in your Clubcard account.

Two ways to convert

1. Automatic exchange (auto opt-in)

You change your Clubcard voucher scheme to Virgin Points. Virgin's page explains the route: sign in to Clubcard, go to Clubcard account → Clubcard management → Voucher schemes → Virgin Points. From then on:

  • Your points convert automatically on each quarterly Clubcard statement instead of becoming vouchers.
  • Tesco's terms say the minimum is 150 points, in steps of 50.
  • You don't have to wait for the statement. Virgin's "Instant Points" option lets you request Virgin Points between statements if you're signed up to auto-exchange and have at least 150 Clubcard points.

Current sign-up bonus (official Virgin terms): if you sign up to auto-exchange for the first time between 00:00 GMT on 26 October 2026 and 23:59 GMT on 24 January 2027, Virgin awards 2,500 Virgin Points. You must still be signed up on 24 January 2027 and have at least 250 Clubcard points that day. Virgin says the bonus will be credited by 22 February 2027. You're not eligible if you, or anyone in your Clubcard household, has ever signed up to auto-exchange before.

2. Manual exchange of vouchers

If you already have Clubcard vouchers, you can exchange them for Virgin Points online from £1.50 "whenever you like".

How quickly do the points arrive? Not yet confirmed. Tesco's terms say Virgin Red "aim to apply these to the appropriate account within seconds". Virgin's Tesco page says manual exchanges are credited "within 28 days". Allow for the longer time if you're about to book.

Worked examples (official figures only)

Example 1: the floor value. Virgin's Points Plus Money lets you use points "in multiples of 3,000 for a £16.50 discount" on Virgin Atlantic flights or Virgin Atlantic Holidays (UK only), with at least 3,000 points per person. That's 0.55p per Virgin Point.

  • 1,500 Clubcard points are worth £15.00 in Tesco vouchers.
  • Converted, they become 3,000 Virgin Points, worth £16.50 off a Virgin Atlantic booking with Points Plus Money.

So the fallback gives slightly more than face value at Tesco, but only if you were going to book with Virgin Atlantic anyway.

Example 2: Virgin's own spend example. Virgin's Tesco page says that if you "spend £500 per month in store", you can "exchange 500 Clubcard points for 1,000 Virgin Points". Tesco's earn rates vary by product and channel, and that spend example is Not yet confirmed on Tesco's own site. The 500 → 1,000 conversion itself matches the official 1:2 rate.

Example 3: reward seats. Virgin says Saver reward seats start "from only 6,000 points" one way, plus taxes, fees and charges. That's 3,000 Clubcard points (£30 at Tesco) before the cash charges. Reward seat prices "vary based on demand", so check the actual flight. Virgin's page also shows a sample cash charge, but the figure we saw on 1 November differed from what we recorded on 30 October for the same route and calculation date, so we haven't quoted it.

Before you switch

  • It's one-way. Tesco: "Once Clubcard points have been turned into Virgin Points, the process cannot be reversed." Virgin says the same.
  • Auto-exchange replaces your vouchers. While it's on, you won't get Clubcard vouchers on your statement. That matters if you rely on vouchers for your grocery shop.
  • Christmas Savers top-up and bonus vouchers can't be exchanged for Reward Partner codes, under Tesco's terms.
  • 16 and 17-year-olds can't use Reward Partners.
  • Expiry. Clubcard vouchers are valid for two years. Virgin promotes "points that never expire". See our expiry rules guide.

Is it worth it?

  • Probably yes if you collect Virgin Points for flights, upgrades or Virgin Atlantic Holidays. The conversion gives you twice as many points, and the 0.55p Points Plus Money floor slightly beats 1p per Clubcard point.
  • Probably not if you use Clubcard vouchers on groceries or with Reward Partners, and have no Virgin trip planned.
