Booked before 25 November? How BA's old extra tier points still apply
BA cuts extra tier points on long-haul premium flights from April 2027, but bookings made before 25 November 2026 keep the old rates. BA's figures explained.

In short
- BA is cutting the extra tier points on long-haul Club World, First and basic World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy) fares. This covers flights departing from 1 April 2027.
- The new rates apply only to flights booked on or after 25 November 2026. If you book before 25 November 2026, you keep the previous rates, whenever you travel.
- Any flight departing on or before 31 March 2027 earns the previous rates, whenever you booked it.
- Short-haul and long-haul economy (World Traveller) are not changing.
- Don't book a trip you don't need just for tier points. But if a 2027โ28 premium cash trip is already planned, the booking date matters.
What are extra tier points?
On flights marketed by British Airways you earn tier points in three ways:
1. 1 tier point per ยฃ1 of eligible spend. That's your fare plus any carrier-imposed charges. Airport charges and government taxes don't count.
2. Extra tier points, a fixed number per individual flight. It depends on haul, cabin and fare type. This is the part that's changing.
3. 2 tier points per ยฃ1 on add-ons such as bags, seats and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) contributions. SAF is capped at 2,000 tier points per membership year.
No extra tier points on: BA's Club terms say you can't earn them on Economy Basic fares, Reward Flights, upgrades using Avios, airport upgrades, or upgrades on flights operated by partner airlines.

Worked examples
All the numbers below are extra tier points only. You also earn 1 tier point per ยฃ1 of eligible spend, which isn't changing.
Example 1: return in Club World, Business fare (2 flights), travelling May 2027
20 November 2026
- Calculation:
- 2 ร 500
- Extra tier points:
- 1,000
1 December 2026
- Calculation:
- 2 ร 200
- Extra tier points:
- 400
Example 2: return in First, Flex fare (2 flights), travelling June 2027
Before 25 November 2026
- Calculation:
- 2 ร 1,050
- Extra tier points:
- 2,100
On or after 25 November 2026
- Calculation:
- 2 ร 700
- Extra tier points:
- 1,400
Example 3: return in World Traveller Plus, Semi-Flex (2 flights), any 2027 date
- 2 ร 375 = 750, whenever you book. This fare isn't changing.
Example 4: short-haul business, BA's own example
- BA shows 10 Business returns to Madrid (20 flights) earning 3,500 extra tier points: 20 ร 175.
- Club Europe rates aren't changing, so this is the same whichever date you book.
Why this matters more from April 2027
From 1 April 2027 you'll also need more tier points:
- Silver: 8,000, up from 7,500
- Gold: 21,000, up from 20,000
- Bronze: stays at 3,500
So long-haul premium flyers face higher targets and fewer extra tier points per flight. That only applies to flights booked from 25 November 2026.
Should you book before 25 November?
A short checklist:
1. Was the trip already going to happen? If not, don't book it just for tier points.
2. Is it a long-haul Club World, First or basic Premium Economy fare departing from 1 April 2027? If not, the date doesn't change your extra tier points.
3. How sure are your dates? Read the fare rules before you book. If you change a booking later, the tier points you earn are based on the eligible spend of the updated ticket.
4. Check the estimate before paying. BA shows a tier point estimate, including extra tier points, under Rewards in the Review and Pay step. After booking, Manage My Booking shows it too.
5. Add your Club number to every booking. The name and date of birth on your account must match your passport.

What BA hasn't said
- Changed bookings. BA hasn't said what happens to the rate if you change a booking made before 25 November on or after that date. Until BA does, don't assume a changed booking keeps the previous rate.
- Partner bookings. BA hasn't explained how it applies the booking date to flights booked directly with American Airlines or Iberia.
