Smiles (e&)

Smiles by e& explained: earn 1 to 10 points per AED on e& services by tier, Smiles Unlimited at AED 29 a month, 24-month expiry and Etihad Guest at 8:1.

In 30 seconds

Who it's for

e& mobile and home customers, and anyone who orders food, groceries or home services through the Smiles app often enough to build up points and use the Buy 1 Get 1 offers.

Who it isn't for

People who don't use e& and rarely order through the app, or who might forget the app for months at a time.

Our verdict

Smiles is free and points come in automatically from e& bills and app orders, so it's worth having if you're an e& customer. Open the app regularly, because inactivity can wipe your points, and only pay for Smiles Unlimited if you order often enough to beat the monthly fee.

Key facts

  • On eligible e& services, Silver members earn 1 Smiles point per AED 1, Gold 2 and Diamond up to 10.Sources: S2, S1

  • Smiles Unlimited costs AED 29 a month, auto-renews, and first-time subscribers can try it free for 14 days.Sources: S2, S5
  • You can move points between Smiles and Etihad Guest: 8 Smiles points make 1 Etihad Guest Mile, in blocks of 3,000 points.Sources: S6, S4

Insider tips

  1. Log in at least every few months. The T&Cs say points expire after 2 years or after 6 months of total inactivity on the app or website, whichever is earlier, and that e& may expire all points if you don't log in for 6 months in a row. Opening the app now and then protects your balance.Sources: S3
  2. Spend points on your e& bill. Points can pay for food and grocery orders, home services, and e& bills and recharges, or be swapped for vouchers at more than 3,000 partner outlets. Using them on a bill you'd pay anyway is a simple way to make sure none go to waste.Sources: S1
  3. Order for family on your own account. Each Smiles account is linked to one mobile number, but you can order or book for family and friends and still earn the points yourself.Sources: S2
  4. Try Unlimited free, then decide. First-time subscribers get a 14-day free trial. You can cancel during the trial and you won't be charged; otherwise it renews at AED 29 a month. Cancel in the app under Smiles Unlimited > Manage Subscription and the benefits run to the end of the current billing cycle.Sources: S2
  5. Check the free delivery minimums. Smiles Unlimited's free delivery needs food orders of AED 30 or more and grocery orders of AED 50 or more, after discounts. Small top-up orders won't qualify.Sources: S2
  6. Download discount coupons just before you use them. Discount coupons cost AED 2, AED 5 or AED 10 and expire 2 weeks after you download them, unless the coupon says otherwise. They can't be refunded or replaced.Sources: S3
  7. Claim missing points within 6 months. If points from a transaction don't appear, you can make a claim to the e& contact centre within six months, with a copy of the invoice or receipt. Prepaid recharge points can take up to 48 hours to arrive, so wait before you claim.Sources: S3
  8. Top up Etihad Guest when you're close to a flight. Convert in blocks of 3,000 Smiles points, which give 375 Etihad Guest Miles. Transfers are instant in the app, should show in Etihad Guest within 24 hours, and can't be reversed, so only convert when you know what you'll book.Sources: S6, S4

Common mistakes

  1. Trusting the 24-month date alone. Points last up to 24 months, but 6 months without any activity on the app or website can end them sooner.Sources: S2, S3
  2. Forgetting the trial renews. Smiles Unlimited auto-renews at AED 29 a month after the trial. There's no pause option, so cancel if you won't use it and re-subscribe later.Sources: S2
  3. Spending points on tiny food orders. Points used on food orders must be worth at least AED 1 per transaction.Sources: S3
  4. Trying to combine or transfer points. Smiles points can't be transferred or combined with another person's account.Sources: S3
  5. Converting points without a plan. Conversions can't be undone, and round trips lose value. ADNOC, for example, takes 15 ADNOC points for 1 Smiles point but gives only 6 ADNOC points back for it, so 15 points out become 6 points back (our sum). Transfers to Etihad Guest can't be reversed either.Sources: S8, S6

How to earn faster

  1. Move up a tier if you're an e& customer. Gold members earn 2 points per AED 1 on eligible e& services and Diamond up to 10, against 1 for Silver.Sources: S2, S1
  2. Order through the app. Food, grocery and home services orders made in the Smiles app all earn points automatically.Sources: S5
  3. Bring in points from other programmes. Rewards Exchange lets you link other loyalty memberships and convert points into Smiles points instantly. Check the rate in the app first, and only convert what you'll use.Sources: S4

Best time to earn or redeem

Earning

  1. Start Unlimited when you'll actually order. The 14-day free trial is for first-time subscribers only, so start it in a fortnight when you expect to order food or groceries.Sources: S2
  2. Check postpaid points after a week. Points on postpaid bills arrive within a week of payment, on the bill amount excluding VAT. Paying more than the bill doesn't earn extra points.Sources: S3

Redeeming

  1. Get a reminder before Smiles points expire. Points can lapse after 24 months, or after 6 months with no activity on the app or website, whichever is sooner. Use them on your next e& bill or order if you haven't opened the app for a while.Sources: S3, S1
  2. Use vouchers within two weeks. Discount coupons expire 2 weeks after download, so only download one when you're ready to use it.Sources: S3

Does Smiles Unlimited pay for itself?

  1. Add up what you paid in delivery and home service fees last month on orders that would meet the minimums (AED 30 for food, AED 50 for groceries, after discounts).
  2. Add the Buy 1 Get 1 voucher downloads you'd really use.
  3. If that's more than AED 29, Unlimited pays for itself that month. Over a year the fee is AED 348 (our sum).
  4. For a sense of what a point is worth: ADNOC swaps 1 Smiles point for 6 ADNOC Rewards points, and ADNOC's FAQ credits AED 16.10 of LPG subsidy as 16,100 points, which is AED 0.001 a point. So 1 Smiles point is worth about AED 0.006 there (our sum). Treat that as a floor, not a promise.

Example with made-up numbers

  • 6 food orders a month with an AED 7 delivery fee each: 6 ร— AED 7 = AED 42.
  • AED 42 โˆ’ AED 29 = AED 13 ahead that month.
  • With only 3 such orders it would be AED 21, so you'd be AED 8 behind.

Is it right for you?

Answer honestly, thinking about the next few months.

  1. Do you pay an e& mobile or home bill?

Yes is a good sign: Eligible e& services earn points automatically, and points can pay the bill.

    Sources: S2, S1
  2. Do you order food or groceries in the app at least a few times a month?

Yes is a good sign: App orders earn points, and frequent orders are what make Smiles Unlimited pay.

    Sources: S5, S2
  3. Do you open the app at least every couple of months?

Yes is a good sign: Six months of total inactivity can expire your points.

    Sources: S3
  4. Would you forget to cancel a free trial?

Yes is a warning sign: Smiles Unlimited renews at AED 29 a month after the trial.

    Sources: S2
  5. Do you mostly order small amounts under the free delivery minimums?

Yes is a warning sign: Free delivery on Unlimited starts at AED 30 for food and AED 50 for groceries.

Mostly good signs

Smiles is worth using. Keep the app active, spend points on bills or orders, and run the numbers before keeping Unlimited after the trial.

Mostly warning signs

Keep the free account if you have it, but don't pay for Unlimited, and use any points on your next bill before they lapse.

Value, with the sums

Smiles doesn't publish one AED value per point. What the official exchange rates do show:

  • ADNOC Rewards โ†’ Smiles: 15 ADNOC points (worth AED 0.015) = 1 Smiles point.
  • Smiles โ†’ ADNOC Rewards: 1 Smiles point = 6 ADNOC points = 6 ร— AED 0.001 = AED 0.006 of ADNOC spending. That's a floor value for a Smiles point.
  • Smiles โ†’ Etihad Guest: 8 Smiles points = 1 Mile.
