Skywards vs Etihad Guest: which suits UAE residents?

Emirates Skywards or Etihad Guest? A side-by-side for UAE residents: home airport, expiry, tiers, everyday earning and which UAE points convert into each.

Summary

  • Choose Skywards if you fly from Dubai (Emirates or flydubai), want Miles that last three years, and want an easy everyday earner (Skywards Everyday, 1 Mile per AED 3).
  • Choose Etihad Guest if you fly from Abu Dhabi, or your points are in Smiles, ADNOC Rewards or Air Arabia AirRewards. They convert into Etihad Guest but not into Skywards.
  • Watch Etihad's expiry: 18 months unless you fly (or are Platinum or Emerald).
  • Both are free, so many residents join both and focus on one.

Best ways to maximise

Current official offers

  • Skywards:
  • Double Miles on partner hotel stays and car rentals, booked by 30 November 2026 (stays completed by 31 January 2027).
  • 2,000 bonus Miles on your first Skywards Miles Mall purchase over USD 50, until 31 March 2027.
  • Etihad Guest:

  • Double Miles on eligible JetBlue flights, travel by 30 November 2026.

Evergreen tips

  • Earn on the ground into the programme you'll actually redeem. Splitting small balances across both rarely gets you a reward.
  • If you're chasing status, compare the thresholds below. Etihad's are temporarily reduced.

Same bank points, two choices (our sums)

If you hold points in a UAE bank programme that converts to both:

ADCB TouchPoints (spend value AED 0.004 at the bill-payment rate)

  • Skywards: 22 TouchPoints per Mile → 22 × AED 0.004 = AED 0.088 per Mile
  • Etihad Guest: 14 TouchPoints per Mile → 14 × AED 0.004 = AED 0.056 per Mile

Emirates NBD Plus (AED 1 per point on most uses)

  • Skywards: 1 point = 7 Miles → AED 0.143 per Mile
  • Etihad Guest: 1 point = 10 Miles → AED 0.10 per Mile

A Mile from either airline has no fixed value, so the "cheaper" Mile is only better if it books the reward you want. More: How to convert TouchPoints.
